Digital Fairy Tales

Tue, 20.03.2018 - 20:00 - W1 - Zentrum für junge Kultur - Special Program

What a combination: Artists from all over the world are paired together and asked to create 3 to 6-minute visual and sound objects inspired by ancient German folk tales. These tales and legends come from Upper Palatinate, the rural region north of Regensburg. The Guardian (5/5/2012) reported a sensation: “Five hundred new fairytales discovered in Germany. Collection of fairytales gathered by historian Franz Xaver von Schönwerth had been locked away in an archive in Regensburg for over 150 years.” It was Erika Eichenseer and her late husband Adolf who rediscovered these lost texts and published them over the years. Erika’s translation into English was followed by many other languages, so people in many countries could access the stories. One was a curator from New York. The Leo Kuelbs Collection’s mission is to bring artists together and present them on independent platforms fostering interconnectivity and understanding across all types of boundaries. Together with Sandra Ratkovic, artist and curator from Berlin, he implemented his idea with the Schönwerth tales. Their Digital Fairy Tales are a free-flowing set of visuals and sound pieces. This presentation of these weird and wonderful tales will bring seemingly ancient archetypal contexts and references into the 21st century. By creating this bridge through time, Digital Fairy Tales reveals and enlivens commonalities of the collective subconscious covering the 150-year period in question and beyond. Also, using digital media, notions of storytelling are allowed to evolve, just as they have throughout history. Digital Fairy Tales is yet another new way to tell some of the oldest stories. The first screenings of both albums presented today took place at the Brooklyn Bridge, New York. Curators Leo Kuelbs (New York), Sandra Ratkovic (Berlin) and Erika Eichenseer (Regensburg) are present today and give an introduction to the Digital Fairy Tales (in English).
